Impressions of our week in Cambridge: Our journey and means of transport: On the way to the airport in Salzburg the whole class was very nervous and everybody was looking forward to meeting their host family in Cambridge. Some were frightened because of the flight and the dangers involved, but after the take off, the atmosphere became more relaxed. In the UK we only used our bikes to get round town and the coach, the train and the underground when we went to London. Returning from our trip to Cambridge the majority was happy to return to our traditional Austrian cooking and good sleeping situations. (Anna Niedan and Nicole Voithofer) The host families: During our time in England we stayed in the houses of host families. Most of the students were very pleased with their hosts and rooms. I personally was very content because I was treated well by my family. They were nice people, my room was clean and I didn’t even have to eat English food. Still some of my classmates complained about cold showers, disgusting food and non-existent towels, but the majority of us were happy with the host families. Also our school in England was very comfortable. It was an old, but very impressive building, like a lot of other buildings in the United Kingdom. (Marc Kranawendter) In Cambridge we, and all the other pupils, were lodged at host families, where we ate our meals and had our own room to sleep and relax in. Although some classmates told me that their host families were unfriendly and disgusting, there were also very nice ones like ours. I think we had the best you could possibly imagine because they were very open-minded and pleasant. Every day we got a packed lunch and tea or something to drink in the afternoon. Matthias and I picked up lots of information our host mum and host dad gave us and I believe we both enjoyed communicating with them the most. (Matthias Rachelsperger and Matthias Mayr) Our excursions:
We went to London twice, on Sunday and on Wednesday. There we visited a lot of amazing sights, for instance Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guards. Furthermore we saw the London Eye ,Westminster Abbey and St Paul`s Cathedral. We were also very impressed by how real the waxworks of the celebrities looked in Madame Thussaud`s . Of course we also had a little bit of free time to explore Campton Market and have a look at Covent Garden. One of the highlights was to see the musical The Lion King. On the whole we liked London very much, because it was an amazing adventure and certainly we want to visit London a second time. (Sonja Brennsteiner and Alexandra Buchner) For most of our time in England we stayed in the beautiful town of Cambridge, which is famous and well known for its university. Another nice little town in England which we visited was Ely. In Ely we visited the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity also known as the "Ship of the Fens".A name inspired by the distant views of its towers that dominate the low-lying wetlands called The Fens.We also had a look at Oliver Cromwell`s house and visited a fruit and vegetable market there. (Kathi Reisinger) English food and coffee houses: We experienced the eating habits of the English and that is exactly what we want to tell you about. Our host family served us mostly fast-food, like pizza with noodles or a kind of meat with mozzarella in between. Furthermore we think that another big difference to Austrian food is that vegetables are mostly served cold. To be honest, we have really been looking forward to eating something healthy again, which we would have never thought before. Another thing we want to tell you about are the coffee houses in England, especially the chain Starbucks. We were really overwhelmed when we drank a coffee there the first day. The list of offered products was incredible. You can get things like a White Café Moccha, Caramel Macchiato and the best muffins ever. That is why we spent most of our free time at one of three Starbucks in Cambridge. Of course there were other coffee houses too, but as far as we were concerned Starbucks was the best choice for us. (Thomas Fazokas and Thomas Woschitz) Sport facilities: The most popular sports activity on our language week was playing pool and snooker. In the evenings the “WT`s”, a student hangout, is crowded and you have to be very lucky to find an unoccupied table. Furthermore there is a football club and a rugby club and we were able to watch a match. Another sport activity we all did together in Cambridge was bowling. The bowling club was so jammed with people we had the possibility to play other games besides bowling, like air hockey. One day we went punting, which was also a lot of fun. We split up into teams of six and had one hour to paddle up and down the river Cam To sum up we want to say that they have great facilities and you have the chance to practice almost any sport you want.
