My Exchange Year (August ‘11 – January ‘12)
I began my journey on the 16th of August this summer with my flight to New York City. I took part in an Orientation Camp with about 100 exchange students, who came from all over Europe. I shared a room with two Dutch girls and a Swiss girl. We visited the Top of The Rocks (Rockefeller Center), we took a ship to the Statue of Liberty, and of course, we visited Times Square a couple of times but these are just a few of the things we did.
After 5 days staying in NYC I took a plane to Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) to finally see my host family. They all welcomed me very warm-heartedly. The family I lived with consisted of the parents Ginger and Ron their four kids named William, Anna Lauren, Kevin and Catherine. All of the kids except Catherine didn’t live at home anymore and were already studying at a University. Just a few days after I had arrived my school started. I attended Myrtle Beach High School and I finally decided to take these four classes: Spanish I, English II, Government/Economics, and Biology.
At the beginning I had some problems with understanding some things but all my teachers and classmates were always glad to help me with my issues. The favourite part of my day was my English lesson because I had such an amazing teacher and everyone had a lot of fun in this class every morning. After school I sometimes studied but of course, I liked it better to hang out with my friends, go swimming in the ocean or take a run on the beach.
While it was still hot we always drove to our Lake-House in Camden on the weekends. One time we drove to Clemson University, where all my host siblings studied, and watched the Homecoming Football-Game.
At the end of November I decided to go on a Florida trip to Orlando with a Swiss, Danish, and a Brazilian exchange student to visit Disney World and the Universal Studios. That trip was definitely a highlight during my stay and the 10 hour ride was worth it. It was a unique chance as well to talk to the other exchange students about their experiences.
The time over there passed so fast and after the Christmas Holidays I just had one week left until I was going to go back to Austria again. So my host family threw a Surprise Good-Bye/Birthday Party with all my friends for me. That showed me how much they all enjoyed having me over there and how much they were going to miss me.
My host family took such great care of me and it was an amazing experience to spend five months abroad in a foreign country. My English has become a lot better and I have also learned a lot for my life later on. I never want to miss it!!!
